Modern I
Goal: A beginners class for students
who have been studying another dance discipline for one year or less. We will concentrate
on becoming aware of the body in space, explore different levels, traveling movements and
positions. We will learn the basic vocabulary of modern dance as developed by Martha
Graham, Doris Humphrey and Lester Horton. We will also work to increase the bodys
strength and flexibility.
Modern II
Goal: An intermediate level class for
students who have been studying Modern I for at least one year, or by instructor
permission. More challenging exercises will be introduced. We will concentrate on the
concept of fall and recovery, jumps, turns and exploration of different musical rhythms
and their dynamics. Further, we will learn more about the history of modern dance from
Isadora Duncan straight through to Mark Morris. More emphasis will be placed on developing
the technique needed to meet the challenges of more daring movements and choreography.
Modern III Goal: An advanced level class by invitation only. Not only will advanced modern dance technique be studied, but also the basics of dance improvisation and choreographic principles will be introduced. This class runs for 90 mins.
